The following helps to give us an understanding of the time spans from Adam to the Flood; and the Flood to Abraham. These figures are arrived at by working backwards from Abraham’s death at 175 yrs of age.

It was 1656 yrs from Adam to the Flood: 427 yrs from Flood to Abraham.

Adam's life overlapped Methuselah by 243 yrs.

Methuselah's life overlapped Noah by 600 yrs; and Shem by 98 yrs.

There were only 126 yrs between death of Adam and birth of Noah.

Noah was born 600yrs before the flood and lived another 350 yrs after the Flood; he died 2 yrs before birth of Abraham.

Shem lived from 98 yrs before Flood till 502 yrs after Flood. He lived for another 75 yrs after Abraham entered Canaan.

Adam was alive at birth of his great-great-great-great-great grandchildren. Noah lived to 9th generation of his own descendants.

Before the flood they lived to a great age.

In such a period of longevity, the population naturally increased very rapidly. After the flood life spans were on a gradual reduction.

As Patriarch and Priest of the Most High God, Shem instructed and recounted to Abraham all the generations from the fall to the building of the Ark; and after the flood when God made a covenant with his father Noah and then sealed His promise with the rainbow.

Shem Noah’s eldest son lived for 502yrs after the flood; his life overlapped Abraham’s by 75 years. It was Abrahams Uncle Shem that told him about the creation, the fall, and the reasons for it, and what the conditions were like immediately before the flood.

Bible chronological order shows us Abraham spent some years living with and Shem Noah’s eldest son. During all that time Shem was teaching Abram about God. He was Abraham’s Priest and teacher.
Who better to teach him than Shem?

God was no stranger to Abraham; and Abraham was no stranger to God. According to Hebrew tradition Shem was Melchisedec the King of Salem (Jerusalem).

Abraham was called 427yrs after the flood or 300yrs after the confusion of tongues at Babel. Genesis 12: gives us details of Abraham’s call, his journey to Canaan and his sojourn there.
He was to experience many things along the way

God confirmed the covenant in Gen 15:1-6 after his separation from Lot. And Abraham believed God and it was accounted unto him for righteousness.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

The day of the Lord of Hosts is a day of recompence. It’s a day when judgments are abroad upon the proud and haughty, and upon wickedness inside His house.

Genesis 18:17, 19.
“Shall I hide from Abraham the thing which I do for I know him that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord to do justice and judgment; so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham all that which He hath spoken of him.

But it is in times such as these that He will draw near to reassure us. While Abraham and Sarai still had no issue He came to the door of Abraham's tent, shared food and fellowship, gave promises of assurance for Abraham, Sarah, and their progeny of His divine purposes for them. Nor should we fear the future, for as surely as He came to Abraham He will come to prepare us for any eventuality tomorrow.

God begins to open to Abraham's understanding what He is about to do in his generation.

What God was about to do was pour judgment upon corrupt Sodom and Gomorrah? One of the reasons that God was prepared to show Abraham what He was about to do is because He knew that he would command his children and household after him to follow the Lord.

The kind of leadership we men give in our homes is not optional

Exodus 34:7. This merciful God will by no means clear the guilty if they don't repent. It destroys the fallacy that what I do as a father regarding my family doesn't really matter. Something is transmitted. I pass it on in every level of family life. We must exercise our responsibilities regards our families diligently, firmly, and lovingly.

During the great restoration in the rebuilding of Jerusalem Nehemiah ordered everyone to build “over against their own home” and that included the daughters of Jericho.

I call it spiritual genetics. We men are responsible to the third and fourth generations. But before I can transmit anything I have to have received something first; and continued to keep alive in me.

2 Cor 5:17
Thank God that through His grace there are no chains that we are so hopelessly bound too that God can't break. There isn’t a sin we have confessed and repented of that He will ever call to His remembrance against me. It surely is “A great a salvation”.
Genesis 21:5 And Abraham was one hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

Though the promise tarry wait for it; the reception of the prize is the last Act.

Oh how they laughed when Isaac was born. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. (Hebrews 10:35-37 KJV)

When we begin to tell politicians what they should do we need to see to it that our own house is in order. Like Abraham we should be prudent in regard to the kind of people we keep company with.
Don’t walk with the Lot’s of this life. Lot was a double minded and unwise.

Proverbs 13:20 walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise; but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

To walk with a person implies approval love and attachment.
It is impossible not to imitate those we love. So “show me his company, and I'll tell you the man. By the company he keeps I shall easily understand his moral character.
