1Samuel 15:30 then Saul said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.

The obituaries of prominent individuals are usually are written by others after their demise. In Christian circles this is often not the case. Some prominent Christians promote themselves before their demise so that they can be remembered for their (forgettable) exploits. An old friend of mine in Melbourne did so recently. In most cases we don’t see ourselves as clearly as others do. Many believe their approach to religion will assist others to become as successful as they. Why else would they do it?

In the “sixties” Greyhound Bus Company used this successful slogan; “99 Dollars for 99 days, Go Greyhound and leave the driving to us”. For 99 days I did just that and travelled Greyhound around much of the US and many parts of Canada. True to their word they always got me to my destination. This begs the question, how reliable is your religious tour director?

The Kingdom of Heaven certainly exists but don’t rely on religious operators to get you there safely.
They’ll take you and your money for a ride alright, but don’t trust them to get you where you need to go because they don’t know the way; besides your destination is much further than Heaven. Only God can take you to where you need to go. He alone knows the way because He is the way and He has the power to get you there. Don’t be like many former travellers that gave up in disgust when they awoke to the fact they were being “taken for a ride”. No pun intended. You should repent and ask the Holy Spirit to take control of the wheel in your life and trust Him to do the driving. Jesus was driven into the wilderness by the Spirit, and 40 days later came out in the power of the Spirit.

Just a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down in a most delightful way according to “Mary Poppins”, and the following programs have promoted themselves in a similar fashion.
Look at all these institutions that outlived their “usefulness”. Many get recycled but in reality are the same old products in disguise. They reappear only to disappear as quickly as a wink.

The Shepherding movement; Jim Jones and the “cyanide laced coolade”; Dominion theology; the children of God; Potters House; the hyper prophetic gurus, the prosperity movement; Toronto blessing; Pensacola; Kansas City prophets, Tommy Tenny’s Gate keepers; Cell Church; Open church; Seeker friendly church; Micro church; Wolfgang Simpson; Wagoner’s Coalition of Apostles; Holy Oil; Holy smoke; Feathers, Goldust, prayer walking; territorial generational spirits; Ted Haggard’s World Centre for prayer and many others.

We are being told by ‘beanie headed gentiles’ who blow shophars while draped in prayer shawls and every other piece of Jewish paraphernalia they can lay their hands on that we must get back to our Jewish roots, it’s mind-boggling. Currently we have House church planter “Organic” Frank Viola” grabbing the attention of anti-charismatics.

One can’t help but wonder if any good thing can come out of America? The answer to that thought is a resounding no, and that applies to anywhere else for that matter. These movements are an offence to the Almighty. Without exception they eventually fall on their own sword.

However our wonderful God will always meet hungry souls wherever they are located. But it is still a matter of deep concern that people are so desperate to experience God that they will go to great lengths despite the expense to find Him. Most of us however could never afford to travel to these exotic locations in America, or anywhere else.

It’s a stinging indictment on the impotence of the present religious systems and their leaders that they have so little to offer. Preachers usually outnumber the sheep at these events because they have ways of finding the money and the time off to go; furthermore they are more bankrupt than most.

Truth is selective. All of the above used portions of truth to give them spiritual traction, and because they only tell half truths and not the whole truth, they never deliver the goods. Gradually disappointed people drift away. Then viola! It happens all over again in another exotic location.

How much Cyanide in a glass of delicious orange juice does one need to drink to commit spiritual suicide? Strychnine takes a little longer.

"It Might Salve Your Troubled Conscience?

Repentance is not salvation. Its not simply being sorry for sin (it should include that).

Judas repented but to no avail; he returned the 30 pieces of silver and made restitution yet still committed suicide.
Esau’s repentance was ineffectual. For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought is diligently with tears. Hebrews 12:16-17.

Some decisions and acts are irrevocable. God may forgive a murderer but it won’t bring the victim back to life again?

Repentance means to think about the direction you’re going; and then turn around and go in another direction. It is a change of “mind” and “direction” but if it is to bear fruit it must have faith in God with complete reliance and trust in Him. This complete turnabout will lead to confession, forgiveness, and salvation. It is a gift of God Eph 2:8-9.

David said I thought on my ways and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. Psa 119:59-60.

In the New Testament repentance is absolutely and chiefly personal. The call to repentance is no longer a National message. The custody of the Kingdom was taken from Israel; and then it became personal and individual when Christ proclaimed it Matt 4:17; later Peter confirmed it.

"A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense" They stumbled being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy” 1 Peter 2:8-10. (NKJV)

It has reference to repentance from sin; this change of mind involves both a turning from sin and a turning to God. It’s a gift of God. Rom 2:4 despise thou the riches of His goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance?

The parable of the Prodigal son is a classic example of this.
He came to himself after he had thought about his situation; and then he thought about the servants in his father’s house; and then he made a decision saying to himself “I will arise and go to my father”, and I will say, “Father, I have sinned against Thee and against heaven, and when he did this his father fell on his neck, kissed him and forgave him. The rest is history.

Repentance and the changes that accompany it are continuous, ongoing, and ceaseless for as long as we live.
2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all with open face behold as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, by the Spirit of the Lord.

In 1995 when we were in Santa Barbara taking a seminar, I was interrupted during the service by an elder brother who walked onto the platform and spoke to me in tongues; he then went on to interpret the message. I was literally stunned by what he said.
Among the many things the Lord confirmed to me was that my methodology was going to change. What He had been showing me would necessitate continuous personal change because the message He was giving to me to proclaim was to be lived not just to be declared. It was start of a journey that continues to unfold to Anne and myself.

Jeremiah 48:10-12. “Let him be cursed who does the Lord's work half-heartedly; let him be cursed who keeps back his sword from blood”. (It is important to notice here that those called to be His instruments for bringing chastisement upon Moab were to be blessed in their work if they did it honestly. But if they did it half-heartedly and cowardly they would be cursed).

He wanted Moab’s undivided attention

“ From his earliest days, Moab has been living in comfort; like wine long stored he has not been drained from vessel to vessel, he has never gone away as a prisoner: so his taste is still in him, his smell is unchanged. So truly, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will send to him men who will have him turned over till there is no more wine in his vessels, and his wine-skins will be completely broken”. (BBE)
Let me explain. It was customary to pour wine from one vessel into another to improve the quality by separating the liquid from the dregs.
From the time that Moab had taken land from the giants Deut 2:9-10; they had kept it and prospered; but they failed to continue to trust in Jehovah and order their lives accordingly, instead Moab had settled on his lees.

He will eventually get the attention He deserves from us, make no mistake Isaiah 30:15-18. For thus said the Lord Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. And ye would not: but you said, No, for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, we will ride upon the swift; therefore they that pursue shall be swifter. One thousand shall flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five shall ye flee until you are left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain and as an ensign on a hill. And therefore will Jehovah wait, that he may be gracious unto you; and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for Jehovah is a God of justice; blessed are all they that wait for him.
We can fall on the rock here and now, or have it fall on us later.
All of us are resistant to change but change we must, and change we shall. No matter how comfortable or successful we think we are none of us has arrived. Phil 3:9-15.

Change is inevitable
Moab’s problem was he had taken his ease; become smug and stale. His wine had turned sour. His savour of righteousness had disappeared; he had become self confident, obnoxious, and unpalatable before God and man.
He had learned none of the lessons he would have had he been invaded and humbled more often. So the Lord sent him tilters, to empty his vessels, toppling and smashing them. Moab would eventually go into captivity.
Indifference and smugness can set in quite deviously.
A little slumber a little sleep and before we realise we have grown cold.
How can this affect me?
He who is faithful and true will begin to stir your nest so as to get you out of it.
Let him that has an ear, (and we all have them) hear what the Spirit is saying to us.
